FuddyTV Music Moment

At FuddyTV, each of us has our own tasks when we shoot a video. Obviously Dave and I do most of the acting, and Erik has been putting in some great performances lately! When the video is done shooting, Dave and Erik do the editing and it comes to me to do the music.

Music is one of the most important things in my life. All kinds, all brands, all types…it doesn’t matter…if it sounds good I like it. So when the edited video comes to me I put the sound effects and music to the video. Remarkably this is what takes the most time…THE MUSIC. I really take it very seriously when choosing the music for our videos, because it can make or break it. So keep a close ear to the music when watching the video…the music generally means something.

With that said, here are some cool songs that we (I?) like at FuddyTV:

King Without a Crown - Matisyahu (an orthodox Jewish rapper…awesome):

Lazy Eye (Jason Bentley Remix) - Silversun Pickups

Staralfur - Sigur Ros (Heard this one when I watched “Life Aquatic” such a beautiful song)

Enjoy!

FuddyTV in the April Avenue Magazine

Avenue Magazine Calgary

READ THE LITTLE BLURB HERE!

So far we have been excessively lucky to get the publicity we have, on BT, CNN, and News Knight with Sir Trevor MacDonald. I can’t believe it but out of the two outlets we’ve contacted we’ve been accepted by two, so with that in the April issue of Avenue Magazine in Calgary we’ll have a small little blurb about FuddyTV!

Dave did the telephone interview and he’ll make us proud no doubt. We’ll have our mugs in the magazine as well, using the picture we use on the About Fuddy page. It is this type of exposure which we are so thankful for and so happy to get…it will only help us grow and achieve our ultimate goal of making full length feature films under our own production company.

And we’ll hire all of you if we get it.

So check out the April issue of Avenue Magazine and check out the little blurb!

Free Music at FreeCulture.org

I made an interesting find today while trying to find a song for our Big Rock Beer commercial…

Free Music FreeCulture

From http://freemusic.freeculture.org/:

We know you love music. We know you love free music.

Freeculture.org is building a library of the best free music the web has to offer. And we need your help.

This will be your music — you are the curators and creators. We want everything: all genres, all time periods, all cultures—as long as it is available under a license for sharing and collaboration.

Our first project is with OLPC, the One Laptop per Child project, also commonly referred to as the $100 Laptop.
Help Us

* Find your favorite freely-licensed music.
* Upload it here on freemusic.freeculture.org.
* Outline the license this music is being shared with, specifying how others can re-mix and build upon it.
* Watch as your contribution may be shared with the world via the OLPC project!

Do you love some tunes that aren’t freely-licensed? Contact the creators and let them know about this project so that they might participate.

If you are a musician and have music which you’d like to record, we are working with Antenna Alliance, a Boston-based organization that provides free recording and promotion for musicians who release music under free licenses.

Selected songs uploaded to the site will be included in the first music library shipping with laptops from OLPC. The selected songs will reflect a variety of cultural and musical traditions and be made available to millions of children around the world for listening, play, and experimentation. These songs won’t just be made accessible to children, but to everyone via the Web.

To learn more about the philosophy behind our project with OLPC, visit the OLPC content philosophy.

Awesome! In fact I took the time to check out many of the songs on there and there are some fantastic songs! Some of which I have on repeat…RIGHT NOW. By the way, the Big Rock commercial video is doing amazingly well. This may be because I switched video editing software from Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 to Sony Vegas Pro 8. Amazing the difference really.

Check out http://freemusic.freeculture.org/ and listen to some great music…for free!

FuddyTV at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo!

We got a booth!

Calgary Comic Entertainment Expo

April 26th and 27th, 2008 we’ll be at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo grinding up some support for FuddyTV and hawking some stuff to sell and so on. This was originally Erik’s idea, thinking it would garner some good exposure and get us some experience in the world of conventions and selling FuddyTV, but I wasn’t sure if we’d actually be able to do it. Well we did! Now we have to find some things that will get attendees attention and make our mark on the show…My first thought —> Dress up as Boris. Why the heck not!? Years ago my shyness went out the door so this would be a great opportunity to show the world all we can do at FuddyTV.

We just have to learn how to do it.

I’ve never been a part of any convention except for the one time I modeled for Schick Razors as a fireman in pink suspenders, but other than that I’ve never been to one, nor would I know how to run one. Perhaps that is a good thing however, we can go to the convention with a clear mind and a fresh idea. While there will be others at the convention who have been to many, if not all, we’ll go in there boots strapped on, ready for anything that comes at us.

I was looking the the Calgary Comicon website and there is quite the lineup of people who will be attending. I believe my favorite will be George Takei…what convention is complete without a Star Trek character? I thought so…

George Takei Calgary Comicon

We’ll have more updates as soon as they come rolling in, but in the meantime be sure to check out the Calgary Comicon and come see us at our booth!

A Creepy Shoot

Here I am sitting at a laptop computer, in an uninspiring hotel room, drinking black coffee because they didn’t leave any creamer when they cleaned the room this morning. Normally I like hotels, in fact, I LOVE hotels…someone else cleans for you, there’s always cable TV, there’s a desk, a fancy bathroom and magically clean towels appear when you arrive back to the room.

Creepy Hotel Room

This one…not so much.

Perhaps it is the 65 foot ceiling or the bed that feels like granite or the ground floor location with running diesel trucks clunking away throughout the day. I don’t know exactly how to pinpoint this one, but there’s something not right about it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a shabby place, it’s new and fancy, but there’s something about the feng shui in here that makes me feel uncomfortable and creepy.

Speaking of creepy…Dave and I are shooting a short movie for our friends Mike and Eric. It’s a beautiful script where we play brothers, one who is about to die (Dave) and one who is searching for his place in life (Ryan). We’ve done our first bit of the shoot and it has been just awesome…you realize when you are away from something how much you miss it and how much you really love it. FuddyTV is wonderful, don’t get me wrong, but it is essentially up to us to come up with everything from script, shots, editing and so on. With “Another Place” we simply can focus on acting and Mike has been an amazing director. Very helpful with motivations, directions and great shots. I believe I may have shed a tear, I can’t be quite sure but when Dave and I were shooting one of the scenes my eyes may have been leaking…

Right, creepy…

A house we are shooting in has a story, as all houses do, but this one has an extraordinary tale to tell. I won’t go into too much detail, but I will say the house we shot in was the location of a suicide in one of the bedrooms. At first I was hesitant to go into the room or even look at it, but curiosity got the best of me and we went to look. Unfortunately it wasn’t your average suicide either, it was a fairly dramatic end…the person chose a gun to put an end to a life.

It is amazing to be in such a place where you know someone took their own life. Not only is it eerie and strange, but there’s a hum and sadness that falls over the place…which actually played exactly into some of the scenes we were shooting.

I kept waiting for something to happen, something to reveal itself as the day wore on. I guess I believe in that stuff, that nobody really goes away when they, well, go away, so I was wondering what small sign I would see when we were there. It didn’t take long…

As we were setting up for the first shot, ready to go for the first scene, the camera was set, the lights were in place and Dave and I were on our marks. Mike and Eric were next to the monitor watching and as any director does counts down to action…

3, 2, 1…Action!

Crack! One of the florescent lights cracks, burns out in dramatic fashion and falls off its clamp. There’s a moment of silence, I look to Mike, Eric, Erica and Carl…wondering did that just really happen? I’m not sure if anyone else saw any significance in that, but I sure did and it set the tone for the rest of the day. We were in his house, and he reminded us that he was certainly still there….

The Next Fuddy Shoot: Glengarry Glen Ross

I’ve found over the last little while that not that many people have seen an amazing movie written by master writer David Mamet and starring Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, Jack Lemmon and Alan Arkin. The movie is called “Glengarry Glen Ross” and it is perhaps one of the most studied films by actors and directors alike.

So when Dave announced that the next FuddyTV shoot would be a scene from the movie, I was excited. The movie itself is, in a word, wordy. But if you appreciate great acting and a well plotted story you’ll enjoy it. Here’s a sample scene from the movie of which I found on the YouTubes. Watch this and you’ll get an idea of why we chose to do one of the scenes.

The scene which Dave and I did is Ed Harris and Alan Arkin talking about taking some leads…the illegal way. And we have to thank Jeff & Bernie at the Barking Frog in Lake Chaparral for letting us shoot there! This is a shameless plug, but I’ve known Jeff & Bernie for a long while and not only are they great people, but they make the Barking Frog such an amazing place to go for a drink!

Friday is the day!

When Good People Do Stupid Things

I can never claim that I’ve done the smartest things in life or made the best decisions, in fact, I’m not really sure if any of us can. Mistakes are just a part of being human, but it is the best of us that choose to learn from those mistakes that we’ve experienced. I recently made a dumb decision, based purely on the past and emotion and I kick myself in the butt for doing it. I have always found it fascinating when we look back at those moments when we’ve made the wrong choice and think to ourselves, what the heck was I thinking? When was that ever going to be a good idea?

Not This Shit Again

In my time in Los Angeles I learned so much about life and about what to do when faced with adversity. I actually laugh now when I think about the plethora of incredible situations I was faced with. Bad people, bad times, wrong places…all of that. Yet when I look back all I can do is shrug my shoulders, giggle a little and take heart in the idea that I took the positives and learned. I learned. There are people out there who learned life through university, through family life, by books…I didn’t go that route. I took my bags, walked down that unchartered road and dealt with what crossed my trail. In some respects this was a good decision, in others it was not. I look back and think that maybe living those mistakes isn’t always the best plan, maybe listening to the things that were said was actually the better way to go.

Fork in the Road

Needless to say I made a mistake recently. I made a bad choice. It wasn’t a life changing choice or a socially unacceptable one, but it was enough to make me feel terrible. Sometimes it is the littlest things that you do, that affect YOU the most, whereas the world around goes by with little more than a blip on a radar screen. For instance I am writing this, taking the time to sit and pour out the things that I meant to say but didn’t. So while the world may not notice a thing, I feel like a good writing is in order. Funny how that works…

We’re all going to make mistakes and bad choices, hopefully we go through life not making too many and avoiding the bad ones. But I will take this bad decision I made and learn from it, as we all should, but sometimes do not. Good people do do stupid things, and from that they will learn, whereas the rest won’t…

I learned something tonight.

Cheers,
Ryan

Find us on Facebook

A couple weeks back I was sending a message to a friend on Facebook and up came a notice that I was violating Facebook’s terms regarding spam messages. I thought, what the heck is this all about? I had hardly been sending messages to anyone, let alone using it as a way to spam people. So I dug a little deeper and found that if you were the administrator of a Group on Facebook, they count your messages as messages sent by just YOU, not the group. So basically every time I sent a notice of a new video, that was counted against me, and when you have 200+ members in a group, well that can add up.

So the solution was to start a “Fan Page” on Facebook. It basically contains all the same features as a group, but doesn’t consider it spam when I send out the messages to all the members/fans.
